Hitachi New Technology Lets User Control Electronics With Brain

Hitachi New Technology Lets User Control Electronics With Brain

The Web Browser is the New Laptop

I've been reading a lot of good things about the emerging "netbook" category of subnotebooks:
The term netbook refers to a category of small to medium sized, light-weight, low-cost, energy-efficient, Internet-centric laptops, generally optimized for Web surfing and e-mailing.
Like any self-respecting nerd, I already
own a laptop, of course, but my wife has taken to surfing the internet at night and doing her Java-based New York Times crosswords in bed. Plus there's the whole pregnancy thing, so it'd be nice for her to have her own "space" laptop-wise. So I pulled the trigger on an Acer Aspire One netbook.
The specs are indeeed modest, but not bad at all for the $369 sticker price:
Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz CPU
802.11 b/g wireless
1 GB ram
120 GB hard drive
8.9" 1024x600 display
Windows XP Home
webcam, mic, 3 usb ports, ethernet, vga out.
I didn't expect much from this cheap, diminutive laptop; it's mostly for web surfing, light email, maybe a tiny bit of miscellaneous office work. And in case the color choice didn't make it clear, it's not even for me. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!
As I sat down to configure this machine, I belatedly realized that for most of what I do with a computer, this cute little netbook is perfectly adequate. Sure, the keyboard is a bit cramped, it's no performance powerhouse, and the screen size, at 1024 x 600, is definitely the minimum necessary for it to be practical. It took some adaptation, but it wasn't frustrating or disappointing to use. It delivered (almost) the same web experience I'd get on my desktop or laptop, with no serious compromises. It just.. worked.
As stupid as it sounds, I had fallen in love with this silly little netbook.
But even that's not the whole story -- after spending some time with a netbook, I realized that calling them "small laptops" is a mistake. Netbooks are an entirely different breed of animal. They are cheap, portable web browsers.
The most popular application in the world is the web browser. By far. Number two isn't even close. Just check out the front page of
Wakoopa's most used apps:

Dell releases 24" XPS One All-in-One Desktop

Dell releases 24" XPS One All-in-One Desktop

While Dell has had an all-in-one desktop model in the form of the XPS One available for almost a year, it's starting to look a little bit dated when compared to the sleek new desktops released by other manufacturers. That situation has been rectified as Dell just released their sleek new 24" XPS One 24.

The new models start at $1699, which is a $700 price premium over last year's configuration. For all that dough, however, you do get a number of upgrades. Most obvious is the new 24-inch, 1920x1200 16:10 display. They've got Intel's newer X4500 integrated graphics chipset, four gigabytes of RAM and a Q8200 quad core processor from Intel. The new models also include Bluetooth 2.0, 802.11a/b/g/n wireless networking, an 8x Super-Multi DVD+/-RW slot-loading optical drive, and an XPS One specially-designed wireless keyboard and mouse set. Optional upgrades include larger hard drives and the new NVIDIA 9600 GT mobile graphics chipset with 512MB of video memory.
Dell is concentrating more on the media side of things with the XPS One 24 this time around, and put in nicer stereo speakers and a subwoofer from JBL. All of the new XPS models come with high definition analog and digital TV tuners, which take advantage of Windows Vista's built-in media center to instantly make a very capable DVR and HTPC. Moreover, you'll be able to add a slot-loading Blu-ray disc drive to the bundle to take care of high definition movies.
Dell is also pushing the PRODUCT(RED) version of the new XPS One 24. PRODUCT(RED) is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting the spread of AIDS in Africa. Purchases of the RED version each contribute between $50 and $80 to the effort.

Nokia's mystery device? The Nokia N97

Nokia's mystery device? The Nokia N97

Twenty-four hours after teasing us with news of a major product announcement, Nokia officially took the wraps off its mystery smartphone on Tuesday at the Nokia World 2008 conference in Barcelona, Spain. And despite some close guesses, no one got it quite right, so without further ado, let us introduce you to the Nokia N97.
Part of the company's high-end
N series of multimedia computers, the N97 trumps all previous models with a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard and a tilting 3.5-inch touch screen (anyone else reminded of the AT&T Tilt or Sony Ericsson Xperia X1?). Yes, there's the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, but the N97 includes phone capabilities and is designed for the "needs of Internet-savvy consumers."
For example, the smartphone provides easy access to a number of social-networking sites, and the Web browser supports streaming Flash videos. The N97 also introduces something Nokia calls "social location," which uses the capabilities of the integrated A-GPS sensors and electronic compass to automatically update users' social networks, or let them share their location via photos or videos with friends.
The Home screen can be personalized with widgets of favorite Web and social-networking sites. Finally, the N97 is fully compatible with Nokia's Ovi Internet services, which include the
Nokia Music Store, Nokia Maps, and the N-Gage gaming platform--though these services have yet to fully launch in the United States.
The Symbian-based smartphone also features a music and video player, a 5-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, and a whopping 32GB of onboard memory that can be expanded with a 16GB microSD card.
The quad-band (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) world phone is
HSDPA-capable handset, but it currently supports only the 900/1900/2100MHz bands (AT&T's 3G network runs on 850/1900MHz, while T-Mobile runs on 1700/2100MHz). There is integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, however.
The Nokia N97 is expected to ship in Europe during the first half of 2009, with an estimated price of 550 euros ($695). As Crave reader UKStory1355 humorously and astutely noted in our blog post yesterday, "Like it matters to U.S. citizens; we won't see it for 18 months, anyway," there is no official word on when we'll see the N97 stateside. Heck, we're still waiting for the
Nokia N96.
Of course, there's always the possibility of buying the smartphone unlocked, and who knows? Maybe Nokia will surprise us.
Obviously, the Nokia N97 takes a jab at other popular touch-screen smartphones, namely the
Apple iPhone 3G, T-Mobile G1, and Research In Motion BlackBerry Storm, but will it succeed? It certainly has the substance and style to take on the big boys, but will it go the way of the Xperia X1, in which the lack of a U.S. carrier and a high price tag will severely limit its adoption in the States?
Either way, we think that the Nokia N97 looks like a pretty sweet device, and we're looking forward to having some personal hands-on time with it. Above is a Nokia-produced video of the N97. I'd love to hear your initial thoughts.
